Seven Signs It's Time to Replace Your Windows and Doors
Drafts, condensation, sticking sashes and rising noise — how to tell repair time is over and replacement makes sense.
- Condensation between the panes means the sealed unit has failed and cannot be repaired.
- Windows that stick, drop or won't latch are a security issue as much as a comfort one.
- Comfort problems are usually felt room by room before they show on a utility bill.
1. You can feel the weather indoors
Cold air at the sill in winter, or a room that never cools in summer, usually points at the glazing and the seals rather than the heating and cooling system.
2. Condensation sits between the panes
Moisture on the inside surface is a ventilation issue. Moisture trapped between two panes of glass means the sealed unit itself has failed. That cannot be cleaned or repaired — the unit has to be replaced.
3. Sashes stick, drop or won't lock
Warped frames and worn balances make windows hard to open and, more importantly, hard to close and lock properly. That is a security problem, not just an annoyance.
4. Outside noise is getting through
Traffic, mowers and neighborhood noise carry easily through single-pane glass and failing seals. Modern multi-pane units noticeably reduce what gets in.
5. Frames are soft, cracked or peeling
Rotting timber, splitting vinyl or corroded aluminum are structural signs. Once the frame is going, replacing glass alone rarely solves anything.
6. Doors don't sit square
Daylight around an entry door, or a patio slider that needs a shove, means the door is no longer sealing. Exterior and sliding doors can often be included in a replacement project.
7. They simply look tired
Windows and doors set the face of a home. If the frames are dated and the finish has gone, replacement is one of the most visible upgrades available — and the one you look at every day.
